I thought so much from where start to tell you about my Ghana, whether to follow the voyage, and then leave from Accra, then head for Mole National Park, Kumasi and Cape Coast, or follow the heart. I chose the heart. As always, when it comes to Africa.
I still remember when I was asked to leave to discover and tell this country. I remember not thinking about a second more and to have accepted it even though, in fact, I did not know what to expect.
For weeks I did not talk about anything else, I did not think of anything else. I was enthusiastic to the idea to (re)caress the Earth that years ago stole my heart.
I remember the shiny eyes and the shivers that went through my body when, on the plane, I realized I was coming. And then, I remember the hot air when I landed, clinging to a big hug, as when we do not see a person to whom we are particularly tied up, for too long time.
An authentic Africa, where traditions have been handed down for hundreds of years. Land of ancient kingdoms, especially the Ashanti kingdom, and castles, those of the slave trade of Elmina and Cape Coast that tell a cruel past, Ghana is colors and smells that blend between smiles and words, traffic and confusion, between curious looks and gestures of love, origins and traditions that coexist with the deployment of modernity.

Kumasi, the historic and spiritual capital of the ancient, rich and powerful Ashanti Kingdom, is still the heart of the homonymous region. Also nicknamed "the garden city" for the many species of flowers and plants that grow in the area, is Ghana's second largest city.
Still rooted in its origins, its streets, not too busy, allow the traveler's look, curious to pick up a few details, which makes the city special: colonial buildings around the market, hand-painted advertising signs with an original style that someone does not hesitate to get closer to urban art, the train that crosses the market and sometimes stops in the middle.
Ogni sabato si celebrano i funerali in ampi spazi all'aperto.

Considered a royal city as the sage Ashanti resides, whose role today is mostly symbolic, Kumasi is the home of culture, traditions and colorful and picturesque Ashanti rituals.
In Ashanti, in fact, everything has a special charm, even the funeral celebration has a different value than the one designed by the Westerners. Not a macabre and tearful moment, but a ceremony that the family does to accompany the Okra on its journey to the world of ancestors and hence to a happier state of affairs. That's why someone's death is considered a moment of joy, where the funeral becomes a real celebration that everyone can participate.
Every Saturday, funerals are celebrated in large open spaces. Relatives are dressed in red, while friends and acquaintances in black. Balls and songs accompanied by the voice of the griots, pay homage to the family of the deceased and to the king of the Ashanti clan whose family belongs, recognizable by the sacred umbrella overwhelming the head and the amazing wealth of its traditional gold jewelery.

Kumasi is a city boasting both a glorious past and a solid present. Some buildings, for the richness of decorations or for the particular architectural style, have been included by UNESCO in the list of World Heritage Sites.
But true Kumasi is breathing in the Central Market, the largest open market in West Africa (counts 11,000 stalls), as well as Kumasi's pulsating heart.
Disorienting but absolutely fascinating, its goods are pouring throughout the city. Fruits, vegetables, shoes, fish, dresses, glass beads, kente fabrics, batik, ashanti sandals and much more.
Kejetia Market is a loud, colorful, crowded joy, where to dive into the true essence of the country.
